What To Look For in a Driving School

How long has the driving school been established?

A driving school that is well established obviously has created good relations with its clientele. Many new driving schools in Montreal have opened since the moratorium was lifted in January 2012. The SAAQ has closed many schools since the Journal de Montréal exposé (January 2012) on shady practises. Interestingly enough, none of these schools closed were accredited before the mandatory program was abandoned in June 1997.

The SAAQ accredited Road Safety Education Program (RSEP) is a very administratively heavy course to manage. Student files have to be followed carefully or else they may be disqualified. The driving school must be dedicated to follow the necessary protocol, both administratively and pedagogically.

Does the driving school spend time to cater to questions asked by the prospective student-client?

Most consumers have never been in the market for a driving course before and they do not know the proper questions to ask. The driving school that is willing to investigate and cater to its customers needs creates a very important first impression. If the driving school appears to brush off the prospective client before receiving any money, how confident should one feel venturing into a relationship that can last from one to one and a half years?

Is the driving school confident with regards to its teaching and administrative abilities?

Current costs vary very slightly from business to business within any industry. Driving schools that offer their services well below market prices probably do not engage it fair market activities. In essence they take shortcuts that can compromise the integrity or the quality of the course. If a merchant feels that their price offering is one that is substandard - how much should a consumer think the service is worth?

What consumers expect is good value. Check the school’s rating with the accrediting body (AQTR) or the l’Office de la Protection de la Consommateur (OPC).

Teenagers typically view driving as an issue of mobility while parents perceive it as a safety concern.
