Module 11 aims to make you aware of two other causes of road accidents, namely, driver fatigue and distractions. In Canada, fatigue may be a factor in 19% of fatal accidents and 23% of accidents overall: evidently, 1 in 5 drivers is involved in a fatigue-related accident. As for the problem of distractions, it has been underscored especially by the proliferation of cell phones and their increased use by drivers. Since other sources of distraction have undergone only limited study, it is hard to determine the risk each one represents. Therefore, Part 2 of this module will deal primarily with cell phones.

The principles and advantages of eco-driving were presented in Module 1: The Vehicle. Module 12 deals with how to apply eco-driving in everyday life, that is, when purchasing a vehicle, choosing a mode of transportation, planning a trip and performing driving manoeuvres with a passenger vehicle. Further information on ecodriving and energy efficiency in general is available on the Web site of the Agence de l'efficacité énergétique du Québec at www.aee.gouv.qc.ca.
